     Felt properties

WICKING

FELT is an excellent Wicking material and can be used to transport small amounts of Lubricating Oils or other liquids at a uniform rate. Some Felts will lift oil as high as 10 cms above the level in the reservoir.

FELT AS A RESERVOIR

Wool Felt can absorb and hold several times its weight in various fluids including lubricating oils. The combination of storage capacity, inertness to the effect of oil, and it's wicking ability make it an ideal lubricator. Most sleeve bearing motors carry a supply of oil in a pad of Felt and transfer it as needed to the bearing surfaces through a Felt Wick.

FELT AS A VIBRATON DAMPENER

Wool Felt makes a superb Shock or vibration dampener because its stress - deformation curve forms a hysterics loop , soaking much of the energy instead of acting just as a spring.

RESISTANCE TO WEAR :

Woollen FELT is made from Wool. Each Wool fibre has a covering of hard overlapping scales of Keratin ( the same substance as the horns and hooves of cattle ) Keratin is very resistant to abrasion. The presence of scales males FELT not only tough but also makes it an excellent polishing medium.

MACHINABILITY

Wool Felt can be die cut into intricate shapes which will not fray or ravel. It can be stripped, skived, heat formed and run through dies which will form it into cylindrical wicks. It can be sewed readily and can be bonded to most surfaces. Hard Felt can be ground or machined.

VERSATILITY :

Felt is available in thicknesses ranging from 1 mm to 50 mm, in densities from 0.18 gms/c.c. to 0.80 gms/c.c. in wide range of qualities and colours etc.

RESISTANCE TO AGING :

Woollen Felt is essentially ageless. It does not deteriorate with age and its strength, resilience and dimension remain same for longtime.

RESISTANCE TO TEMPERATURE

Within a temperature range of -0.60 ° F to + 250 ° F , if allowed to regain its natural moisture contents at occasional intervals, Wool Felt evidences no change in strength, flexibility and other properties. For shorter intervals it can withstand still higher temperatures.

RESISTANCE TO CHEMICALS :

Wool Felt is completely inert to most hydrocarbons and to a wide range of other chemicals. It is fairly acid resistant but is damaged by alkalies. Water does not harm it but may cause dimensional change.

FLAMMABILITY

Wool Felt does not ignite readily; and when ignited, will under most circumstances extinguish itself. No toxic fumes are released in significant quantities.

INSULATION PROPERTIES

Wool Felt provides excellent insulation against cold and heat and provides high degree of sound absorption.

FILTRATION

Felt is a superb filter for many liquids and gases. Densities and thicknesses can be altered to achieve almost any degree of filtration.
